…And I’m the more!
Well following on from Lena’s latest post, we figured it was about time that I introduced myself. As the title suggests I’m the latest addition to the crew and am taking on the exciting role of travelling teacher, teaching the boys on the road (and sea come to think of it and maybe even one day in the air too).
My name is Rachel (yes like the rock in the last post) and with a passion for travelling and teaching, when facebook brought me this opportunity I knew it could be a very, very exciting one. In between working in London as a cocktail bartender and preparing for some end of year university exams, I got in touch with Lena and the family and it became clear that we shared similar philosophies regarding eduction. Namely, despite me having been a teacher for about the last five years, a belief that traditional schooling is not the one and only way to educate our people of tomorrow and that any sort of education can be enriched with a breadth of different activities and adventures. Both classroom and world based.
Having taught online and in four different countries (and travelled to many more), I’ve been lucky enough to experience different teaching methods and differing attitudes towards education. After a couple of brief visits to Hannover late last year, we started our own little school in January 2019 when I moved from London to be with the family crew, wherever we may go.
During my initial conversations with the family about their dream to homeschool and travel with the boys, a kind of ‘World-schooling’ education if you will, enhanced with a teacher figure to offer some guidance and structure, it was obvious we were all excited by this opportunity to really give the boys the best education we could. More than ’just a school’.
I put together a curriculum based around the best, most effective parts of the English education system to teach essential skills for life and learning (such as reading, writing and literacy) but also taking inspiration from a few other educational and pedagogical theories. Whilst initially these essential skills make up the majority of our classroom time, the second part of our own curriculum is entirely lead by the boys interests and where in the world we happen to be at the time. The boys have lessons individually to allow for individual growth and more age relevant lessons but also some classroom time together, where we concentrate on specific topics and sharing their educational journeys with each other.

So far we’ve made the most of our classroom here in Germany, been skiing in the Alps, started reading books in rural Portugal and taken to the seas. All with our classroom and school (and me their teacher!) coming along on every adventure. And I have to say, both boys have made much more progress in every aspect than I did trying to ski!
So alongside teaching on this adventure, I will also be responsible for updating the school side of this blog and sharing some of the progress the boys are making.
